I own a 1999 S80 T6 which I enjoy very much but one oddity I have found
even with very low miles (37k) is that the power steering system is pulling
air into the system which results in foaming of the fluid and growling from the pump. I don't seem to be losing any fluid but I am
concerned that I will prematurely wear out the pump as well as the rack. I
have spoken with a couple of dealers as well as a couple of independent
repair shops. The comments that I have received range from: "that is not
unexpected and don't worry about it" to "the S80 power steering pumps have
had problems and I should replace both the pump as well as the resevoir."
The dealer tells me that there was no recall activity on the pumps. What
level of concern should I have?
The pump is really easy to replace so if need be I plan to do it myself. My pump was built by ZF Freidichshafen AG. Does anyone know if they ever offered seal replacement kits for the pump?
