When is it time.....? S80 2001

My 2001 has 40K miles and is on its 3rd ETM (both replaced under warranty). The earliest signs of failure I noticed were a feeling that the accelerator and throttle were connected by a rubber band instead of a cable. Of course, neither is the case; Volvo's design replaces the old fashioned but reliable cable with an unreliable potentiometer and stepper motor connected by a local digital network.
