Hello.
I'm new to posting a message on the brickboard and I have some questions concerning the ECC in my '93 850 (188K miles, 5spd). My wife, our 5 month old son, and I were leaving our house when smoke starting coming from the vents and the fan came on at full blast. This was a big problem considering the ECC was OFF (at position 0) and the wonderful smell of something burning filled the cabin of the car. Fortunately, I was able to drive around the block back to our home. I shut car off and waited a few minutes. Next, removed the radio and ECU to check if anything was possibly burnt or smoldering. Nothing. I started the car again the REC and AC lights begain blinking. Also the fan came on briefly, at full blast, and then it quit (still at position 0). After it quit, I tried the turning on the fan via the ECU and got no response. With the car still running, I popped the hood and removed the fuse. The fuse looked good. When I put it back into the slot, the fan kicked on briefly and then quit. Wierd. Later that night I pulled the codes from the B1 port and got quite a few. They are as follows:
121 - Outside temp. sensor shorted to ground
123 - Driver's side int temp sensor shorted to ground
125 - Pass. side int temp sensor shorted to earth
131 - Driver's side air duct temp sens shorted to earth
133 - Pass. side air duct temp sens shorted to earth
222 - Pass. side damper motor position sens shorted to earth
232 - Ventilation damper motor position sens shorted to earth
234 - Floor/Defrost damper motor pos. sens shorted to earth
236 - Recirculation damper motor pos. sens shorted to earth
314 - Floor/Defrost damper motor shorted to earth or 12 volts
325 - Recirculation damper motor active too long
412 - Driver's side int temp sens inlet fan shorted to earth
413 - No control voltage at driver's side int. temp sens inlet fan
415 - Pass. side int temp sens inlet fan shorted to earth
419 - Faulty diagnostic singal from blower fan power stage
I have the Haynes repair manaul, so that's how I'm able to copy the meaning of the codes. I'm guessing the *419 code set off most if not all the other codes like dominos. I've searched the archives about problems related to the ECC before I posted this message. I gathered that other people have had problems with either the blower motor resistor or the fan blower motor. As of right now I've got the pass. side dash apart (glovebox and knee bolster). I can see the blower and the resistor.
Questions:
What, if any trouble shooting steps do I still need to do?
Does the 419 code tell me I need to get a new blower motor resistor?
Is the blower motor (ballist) resistor my only problem?
Do I need a new blower, or damper motor?
Do I need new temp. sensors for both the driver's side and passenger's side?
Is there anything I missed?
I'm sorry about the long post, but I tried to tell you as much as I know. I can turn wrenches, but I'm not great with deciphering codes. I also don't like going to the dealer if it's something I can order online and fix myself. I've done the reg. maint. on this car since 147K miles including the front struts, engine mounts, and a clutch job.
Thank you in advance for any advice.
