First year for V70? V70-XC70

What was the first year for the V70 in the USA?

I thought it was around 1997-98 and started with the "new" tall style taillights, but I have seen a V70 and V90 with the older late 80's early 90's small taillights. At first I thought it was a rebadge done by the owner but now have second thoughts about that.
