Air Conditioning question S80

I don't know if I have a problem with my 1999 S80 and would apprectiate any help.
The air conditioning compressor cycles off and on pretty frequently. The air from the vents is cold and cools the car. Is this normal operation for this car or do I need to charge the system. If so, how much should I put in so I don't damage anything?
