I have exact same problem on my '96 wagon. I think it is something to do with compressor getting too hot as it is worse on hotter days. There was another post about a thermal switch on compressor as well as too much gap on compressor plate for it to pull in and removing some shims.

It's always something with this car....

I'll check out relay Chris is talking about as seems like an easy place to start.
