Chances are the struts are ok. It's the spring seats that are the cause of the clunking noise. It looks like a big rubber pancake that has a metal spacer in the center. The rubber is fused to the metal spacer and with time they separate from a constant turning motion. Someone suggested that you bounce the front end and listen.
If a strut breaks, you would see hydrolic fluid on the inside of your tire(s). But, I'll bet it's the spring seats.
Replaced the stuts and the spring seats at the same time.
My mechanic in Fountain Valley, CA. did the job for $480. He used the OEM Boge struts.
It feels better than brand new!
