VERY classic "PNP" switch problem. Refer to Volvospeed.com for replacement info. You should also ocassionaly get a flashing arrow light on your dash. Replace that first before any other assumptions are made. A lot of shops will tell you that you need a new transmission when it's really just the PNP switch. The shifter is not connected to the gearbox at all, it's connected to that PNP switch, which electronically tells the gearbox what to do.
