98 S-70. noisy air pump

The air pump on the wife's S-70 sounds like a F/A -18 Hornet spooling up.
it's in the 20's out and it is louder the colder it gets. Do these things
collect water.. or..?? Is it possible you can just take them out and clean them.
The pump works.. just has a turboish whine to it.

Any thoughts? Tak sa mycket!
