The awd driveline helps you get started in situations where front or rear drive only vehicles might stumble. It also assists with overall handling when underway, although you must watch for power transfer when traction is lost to the front wheels.
Stopping an awd drive wagon is marginally different from a front wheel drive car. But overall, if you needed snow tires on your previous car (for general handling, steering, and braking), then you need snow tires on your XC. From first hand experience, I would not trust my wagon with all season tires.
I live in the snow belt of central Ontario, and all of our cars are equipped with 4 snow tires for winter. But I think you got much more snow this past weekend than we have.
