Another option to check codes is Auto-zones. They offer free CE light diagnosis.

I would have to guess that it might be a faulty oxygen sensor or EGR valve. They are usually pretty common problems at the stage your car is at. volvospeed.com shows fixes for both in the bay 13 section of the page.
