Changing an O2 sensor S80 1999

How do you know what code went off? Does it show up on the lcd screen? The reason I ask is I had the Check Engine light go off and say I had an emission control failure. Apparently this is due to the cap being loose... But I think it was due to the O2 sensor. My neighbor recommended I put some STP in my engine and it would clean it out with a full tank of regular gas. Surprisingly I spent $5 on some fancy STP type cleaner and after a half tank of gas the light went off. But, I think maybe at some point I will have to change the O2 sensor. So if you learn how to do it I'd like to know. thanks
