I replaced all 4 boots on my 95 855T a year or so ago. I too found the circlip to be a problem area. I used a type of pliers that had flat noses and expanded when the handles were compressed. My circlip pliers were not up to the pressure of this circlip. I don't know the technical name for them but they worked a lot better then the procedure described in the Haynes manual with a screwdriver. They do mention taping on the cv joint simultaneously to get it off. It really helps to have an extra pair of hands here.
Good luck.
