Engine cuts out under acceleration V70-XC70 1998

My 1998 V70XC will cut out under acceleration when using half-throttle or more. This does not happen all of the time, but when it does the tach drops by 1000-3000 RPM immediately and then the engine will come and go a few times before resuming acceleration. The whole process usually lasts only about 2-3 seconds and then the car runs fine.

Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to rectify it? Merging into traffic is becoming an interesting experience.
