I don't think so. Volvo shop/repair manual says that the whole strut with the spring intact is removed from the car. Then with a vice to hold the bottom of the strut unit, you use the spring compressor to compress the spring and then unlose the big nut and cross nut on top of the strut. After that you can replace the upper strut mount.
I am going to do it in next couple weeks to replace the stock strut with Bilstein.
