If the battery will not hold a charge (discharges quickly when the car is off), that suggests one or more of the rectifier diodes in the alternator have failed. The sustained high current required to charge the new battery may have overheated one of the diodes. I usually charge a new battery with a small battery charger after installing it.
Or, you could simply have received a bad battery. It happens. See if the battery will hold a charge if you remove the negative battery connector while the car is off. If it still discharges, the battery is bad.
