Odometer broken-help! 850 1997

Well, now my 850 R has gone and done something I can't figure out how to fix! Last week I filled up the tank, reset the mechanical trip odometer and all the computer jazz and went on my way. A few days later, I realized the mechanical trip was still at 000.0. Hmm.... I drove on, and noticed that the main odometer wasn't moving either! WTF? I switched the computer over to the trip setting and it was (and still is) clicking off the miles.

So, now what? Is the mechanical odometer driven by a cable? Is there a connection for it somewhere? I've poured over my Haynes book, and it offers no clues.

I cringe to think how much it would cost me if I just dropped it off at the dealer and said "fix it".

Any advice is appreciated.
