BANG FOR BUCK

The short answer? None. If it's reliability you want, get an end-of-life 944T or 945T.

The 850 and S70 are the same, and Volvo ingeniously trades one set of irritating problems for a new set from year to year. That said, turbo models offer a lot of smooth power, a substantial platform and not-too-bad handling (for FWD). Buy a set of tools.

The 40's are part-Mitsubishi, so I suspect the Japanese DNA mitigates the reliability problems - but you lose mass and power in the smaller car.
