If your CHECK ENGINE light is on, that is the first indicator to check for codes. Also, if you are trying to diagnose a problem, you check to see if any codes are set.

For example, on my 1999, there was an issue with the car starting, running briefly and dying. No warning lights were on, but there was a code set for a failure of the security system that shuts off the fuel if the ignition key is not sending out the right code.
