I'm not sure what the breather box would be refering to. I would assume the flame trap. A clogged flame trap will lead to crankcase pressure which can cause the oil filler cap to leak (replace the seal, it's cheap, try alloemvolvoparts.com), and can also lead to rear main seal failure. The flame trap replacement is covered on Bay 13.

You may need to replace the rubber boot that connects to the flame trap. Mine was severely deteriorated when I bought my '93 this spring.

Transmission sounds like it might be the shift lock microswitch. Replacement instructions are also on Bay 13. Check this thread at the Ozbrick site which will also direct you to the Bay 13 page:
