check engine light V70-XC70

I've had this happen on my '99 X/C a number of times due to the gas cap being improperly installed. The check engine light has always gone off by itself after 2 or 3 days. The gas cap on this car does not have a user friendly design. I've gassed up in NJ 6 or 7 times where there are no self service stations, and have never had the gas cap put back on properly. My wife is also has a problem getting back on correctly as well.
