Trunk Lid Alignment 850

First of all, I would just try removing the bent lift strut to see if that is what is pushing the trunk lid out of alignment. If the trunk closes properly with the strut removed, then just replace the strut, and you're good. The struts are readily available from on-line sources, or just go to the dealer.

If removing the strut does not fix the problem, the lid will have to be readjusted. The trunk lid adjustment is made from underneath the rear hat shelf. You have to remove the shelf cover. In the foggy haze of memory, it seems as though this was more difficult than it seems as though it should have been, but somehow I managed. Best to have the Haynes manual to guide you through it. The clips in the back were somewhat difficult to get released. I think that I ended up going up through the underside from the trunk to get some of them undone.

Once you get the shelf cover off, you will have access to the hinge. There are two adjustments for the hinge. The first is a simple vertical adjustment. This would be done with the bolt that goes through the hinge pivot. There is a vertical slot that would allow up and down adjustment. That would not be what is needed in this case. The hinge itself is on a hexcentric. The adjustment is made by loosening the small hex bolt and rotating the hexcentric to get the proper overhang in the back. Presumably, this was knocked out of adjustment when they tried to close the trunk. If not, then something may have gotten bent. Even if something did get bent, it may still be possible to return the lid to proper adjustment with the hexcentric. If after adjusting the fore and aft with the hexcentric the lid is too high or low, you can then use the aforementioned vertical adjustment to bring that back to the correct position. Good luck.
