Hi,
If you are the owner of a car with the infamous A/C evaporator failure, let's get our government to do something about it since Volvo won't! I searched the NHTSA site and only a few people have reported the problem. NHTSA WILL act if enough people send them complaint forms. They can force Volvo to do a recall and fix the problem. Those of you with the problem and are still under warranty, good for you. The rest of us have to shell out $1200 to get the problem fixed!
This failure causes R134a to slowly leak out of the A/C system and into the passenger compartment. This is a hazardous chemical and if you have this failure, you are being exposed to R134a. Read the MSDS if you don't believe me. Here is an excerpt from the MSDS:
Potential Health Effects
INHALATION
ETHANE, 1,1,1,2-TETRAFLUORO-
Gross overexposure may cause: Central nervous system depression
with dizziness, confusion, incoordination, drowsiness or
unconsciousness. Irregular heart beat with a strange sensation in
the chest, "heart thumping", apprehension, lightheadedness,
feeling of fainting, dizziness, weakness, sometimes progressing to
loss of consciousness and death. Suffocation, if air is displaced
by vapors.
I don't know how much is needed for "Gross overexposure" but do you want you and/or your kids breathing this while riding in your "safe car"? I don't!
Please go to http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/ivoq/default.htm and fill out the form to report the problem. It cant' hurt to try!!!
Thank you.
