When I last rotated my tires I noticed the outside edges of the fronts were wearing a bit faster than the insides. Yesterday, my wife and I swapped cars and I was following her until she turned off to head to her appointment. I saw the car (95 855t, 85k) seemed to be crabbing. The rear looked to be offset to the right. It didn't pull and the steering wheel was straight but I took it to an alignment shop for a front and thrust angle check today. They use a Hunter electronic machine, I didn't get the model #.
They found that the front right was indeed out of spec on toe-in at 0.13d. Spec is 0.06 - 0.11. Camber and Caster were all in spec on both fronts but near the limits so they brought everything nearer the center of the range.
The Camber and Toe on the rears, where I thought there would be a problem, were in spec, but again near limits so they were brought closer to center of spec.
The shop owner offered that with cars like the 850 wagon that have a body tapering at the rear, the wider front track adds to the illusion that the car isn't running straight when viewed from behind.
I had the car inspected before buying in January and no evidence of collision was found. Of course I live in fear of finding out this car is the front and back half of two totalled wagons. Nah, couldn't be. I have it's complete history... Or do I? I'll just refrain from following my own car.
