Adding an OEM 6Disc Changer 850

Here's a post I wrote a while back for another BrickBoard member. It explains how I mounted an Alpine CHM-S620 CD deck in the glovebox. Unless your getting a great deal on the factory unit, I suggest getting an Alpine (that's who makes the Volvo deck!) Crutchfield has the CHM-S630 for $229, and I have an interface cord [www.Blitzsafe.com Vol-Alp V.1, fits '91-'95 volvo to alpine] for sale for $30 shipped [I paid $50+ tax]...) I had to get a different interface cable to fit my '96.

OK, first lets remove the head. There are two small vertical plastic inserts on the face of the head, near the outer edges. Push them in and release quickly and they'll pop out, becoming little handles. When both are out just pull on them and the deck slides right out, cool. On the back of the deck there are 2 plug-in connectors and the antenna cord. There will also be a female plug convieniently labeled "CD" . This is where your interface cord plugs into. Another female plug is labeled "AMP" this is where the factory power amp would go.

You will need to tap in to 12v UNSWITCHED power so the deck can eject the magazines even when the car is off. If I remember correctly, I tapped into the GREEN/BROWN wire. Verify with a voltmeter that this wire has 12v going to it with the key turned off. If it's not the GN/BN wire, you can find a wire with that has 12v. You still with me? I used one of those handy wire splices, a red one.

Next you must remove the glove box. Open the lid, release the lid arms by inserting a small screwdriver between the arms and the lid and carefully pry up to release the arms. Now remove the 6 (?) screws that hold the glovebox to the dash. Mine was stuck and was a bitch to pull out. You'll need to drill a hole, about 5/8" for the interface cord to fit through. My deck is on the right side of the glovebox, with a small storage space on its left. I used 3M brand 2 sided tape, on the bottom of the deck, to retain it. It DOES NOT move! Before you tape it (?) in, make sure its positioned so the glovebox lid can close. It's a tight fit. I also put some foam under the glovebox to help support the extra weight and stop any rattles.

Don't force anything and you should be all set.

Good Luck!
