Well, the maintenance is not "entirely" free. What is entirely free aretheir "recommended maintenance intervals", every 10,000 miles. I doubt many BMW owners wait 10,000 miles to change their oil etc. If your pads wear prematurely, you are on your own. They provide a set for free but that is all. Not a bad set up but it is overglorified (plus you better get something for "free" when you pay through your nose to get one of their cars).
