The light is also referred to as check engine light (CEL) or lambda light. This site has had tons of posts regarding it (just search this site) but www.volvospeed.com and
http://au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/computercodesvolvo.html will also be very helpful.
This light is on if your car's computer (ECU) detects a system or sensor malfunction that may affect emission controls. The ECU then stores a code that can be read with a scanner through an OBD-II interface.
