Tapping lifters harm engine? 850 1994

I've heard the it is caused by dirt(gunk) buildup, and I've also heard that it's from the lifters not pressurizing, ie. not enough oil pressure. I'll try the cleaner first then maybe changing the Oil pan O-rings(gaskets). How involved or technical is the gasket change on the oil pan, should an accomplished, I dare say, shadetree mechanic attempt it? Where could I find instructions, I've checked Bay 13 @ Volvospeed to no avail.
