Stiff shift linkage especially when cold V70-XC70 1999

Dear V70 and S70 manual transmission users,
The shift stick of my wife's 1999 V70 (28,000 miles, stock USA front-wheel drive model with normally-aspirated engine) has become very stiff and "notchy." It is especially hard to shift into first or reverse when the car is cold. We do not have an obvious clutch problem; it seems to be a problem with the linkage. Is this based on rods or cables and pulleys? Any suggestions? Is there anything to lubricate? Thanks!
