Just went through this earlier this week. I had a new battery installed in my 97 GLT. Of course, the radio didn't work afterwards. I unearthed the code card I got when I bought the car (used, from the local dealer). Didn't work. Called the dealer, who looked up the code using the VIN. Waited the two hours with ignition switch in the I position with radio on to reset system. Entered new code. Didn't work. Tried old code once again. Didn't work. Found code from card I thought came with my 96 850. Didn't work because it had a 9 in it (only 6 buttons).
Went to dealer, who pulled radio for serial number, looked it up in computer database, gave me a third number. After work, went through two hour reset, entered third code. This time it worked. Nice to have radio again.
