Additional Lighting Installation? S40-V40 2001

Before you add foglights, you might want to investigate whether e-code lenses are available for your car. E-codes - and a halogen upgrade - will accomplish a great deal. (For E-codes check with Precision Volvo 978.948.7778; for halogens, look into http://www.autolamps-online.com).

For straight-ahead lighting, the usual auxilliary is called a "driving light." They have forward projection, unlike foglights which have a wide sweep and fill in the areas to the sides and near your car but they don't project very far. To see the difference, check out the "light tunnel" feature at Hella's website (http://www.hella.com/produktion/HellaPortal/WebSite/Internet_en/ProductsServices/ForDriversAccessories/LightTunnel/LightTunnel.jsp).

As to foglights, my S70 was prewired so I could use the oem foglight switch with aftermarket foglights.

The problem with oem wiring is that the foglights won't work unless the headlights are on...UNLESS you make some modifications. In my S70, I installed my own relay and tapped into the existing harness so I can turn on my foglights whenever I want (I use them as DRL's, reducing headlamp use). The foglights still go off when I turn off the key.

On his 850, Erlend Hagen used the full oem harness (attached to Hella MicroDE foglights - as good a foglight as you can get). He had to install the oe switch and relay, and a pre-wired jumper to a slot marked "EU" which allowed his foglights to run with parking lights.

For more on E-code lighting check out Dan Stern's informative site, http://lighting.mbz.org/faq/
