your car does not have it. you have to buy the cabin filter kit from volvo and install it. it goes under the hood, just below the passengerside windshield. take out 2 or 3 30torx. i dont exactly know what you mean by "forign smell", but yes, it does filter the air being sucked into the passenger cabin. if anything else, it should give a little protection to your evaporator.
