shocks and brackets 850 1997

As a matter of fact, I just called and it is the rubber mount. What would have caused this to happen? I haven't hit any major potholes... Is there a ballpark estimate, under normal driving conditions, of how often shocks should be replaced? It just seems like this is a premature situation.
