It's not his lack of knowledge on repairs that irked me. It was his complaint on the costs of paying someone else to do the work. I can see how I was hard on him, and I know for I fact that I wouldn't have, had he not made the cost of the repair such an issue.
As for flushing your ATF, aren't SO happy you did it? First of all, it must be a large accomplishment, so congratulations. It will also do much to save you money in the future, as well as in the present, by doing the job yourself.
I can see why one would be hesitant to work on their brakes themselves if they are VERY mechanically uninclined. But to be honest, as long as you follow the instructions, and take your time, I don't see how one can go wrong. Yes, admittedly, doing a brake job doesn't phase me beyond the dislike of getting annoying brake dust under my finger nails, requiring a lot of time and effort to remove later on. But there was a time that it was my first time too. I got through it fine. And I don't doubt that he nor you, would fair any different.
I don't doubt for a moment, nor did I ever say he had no place to question the prices to which he was quoted for the work. But he pretty much knew from the beginning that they were overpriced, and even after confirmation, that the prices were inflated, and more suggestions to doing the work himself were presented, it seemed all he simply wanted was to make excuses for not doing the work himself. "I know where to get cheaper oem parts but I just don't have the time, space, tools, etc. to do this type of work myself. I'm hoping to find a shop that is willing to find cheaper parts, cheaper solutions, etc.. "
It's one thing to want to get a fair price for repairs. But when one is willing to entertain "cheaper parts" on a component such as brakes, it makes me wonder what is really important to him.
I commend your honesty. You understandedly don't have the self-confidence to do a brake job yourself. He on the otherhand speaks in a manner which insinuates he does have the knowledge, and ability, but that he simply does not have the resources. When I presented him with the fact tat the resources could readibly be had with little effort and expense, he seemed to take offence. If he does, and still does, I appologize. But I do not appologize for attempting to motivate him into doing the job himself.
