Car won't start 850 1995

Well, let's add to my recent list of problems! The car was working earlier in the day with no problems. The starter just keeps cranking but the engine won't turn over. Actually, the engine turned over on two attempted starts but then the car completely died as soon as it did. I called up a friend who brought his booster battery and I tried jumping it. Still didn't work after 3 tries....so can I rule out a dead battery? And since it cranks, the starter is good too right? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
