hi,
I believe electromagnetic fields are generated by AC current only. The battery (as an energy storage device) will only provide DC (voltage and current) therefore, no electromagnetic field. The only time we get an AC current through that wire is when you start the engine but this is transient, and probably lasts milliseconds. Negligible. Being concerned about electromagnetism, I would worry more about cell phones that may generate fields close to the max absorption of the human skull, the car alternator, the spark plugs and the wires (applicable in a non-metallic - fiber carbon car), etc. Also, if there is electromagnetic field in the cabin, will the radio (or other sensitive electronics) work properly?

PS. I also own a 00 328 BMW. I noticed a red thick wire going from the trunk (battery) to the engine compartment, but haven't noticed any second negative/ground.
