Tim - By the time you finish worrying about removing the entire console, you are done.
I doubt that you can change the light without lifting the console as you have to pull the socket downward to remove it and push it up to replace it.
There is an earlier post that covers the procedure well. Pull the change holder and remove the two screws. Remove the cover at the bottom of the console storage compartment and remove those screws as well. Apply the emergency brake and shift to neutral. Remove the piece in front of the shifter by pulling up at the end near the shifter.
You'll need to disconnect the lighter wires and unclip the OBD plug by sliding it out while depressing its lock.
You should now be able to lift the console enough to pull the shifter light out, its at the bottom of the white housing under the letters beside the shifter. I think that you need to lift the rear of the console first, then pull back a little. Do not force anything. Having a helper at the lifting stage makes the process easier.
