random stall. what do you think? 850 1996

How many miles do you have on the car?

A little carbon? I just pulled the plugs out of my 1988 740 because it was hesitating occasionally. This car has 228,000 miles on it and the inside insulators and electrodes only had a little beige silicon on them. At my next service, my tech adjusted the idle as it was a little low, problem solved.

The only carbon on your plugs that might be found in a healthy engine is a slight amount on the bottom of the threaded metal shell of the plug. You might have flushed a little carbon from the throttle body into the engine. You could prove that by looking at one of the plugs again, if it is clean, that is what probably happened.

Do you have any codes displayed?

A few years ago I had an engine dieing while accelerating or coasting gently. It turned out to be a sensor in the distributor. My dealer put the car out in his yard and hooked it up to a machine. They told me that it ran for 4 or 5 hours but eventually died, and they were able to diagnose and repair the problem.

If your car dies again, I'd have it towed to the dealer, otherwise, you or they may have a hard time finding the problem.
