Won't start V70-XC70 1998

'98 V70 with 39K miles (but 4 years + 1 week old -- ugh) won't start today. Makes a clicking noise when ignition key turned, but engine does not turn over. Thought that it might be the battery, so tried to jump it, with no success. Anyone else seen anything like this before? Car had been very reliable -- started on the first turn as recently as yesterday.
