Heather, unfortunately to determine what has caused a check engine light (CEL) will probably require a trip to the dealer so they can read the fault code(s) stored by the computer. Did the CEL come on after refueling? If so you might simply have a loose gas cap. A CEL is usually indicative of an emissions-related fault. If the car seems to be running normally have it looked at at your convenience.
