I have never driven an XC, but I think the problem may not be the car, but the road conditions. You don't drive in snow much, and it is always a shock to find out just how slippery snow and ice can be. You stayed on the road, right? You didn't hit anything, right? YOU WON!!!
If the wheels spin or the car slides a little, you are driving too fast for the road conditions. To my mind, the greatest benefit of AWD is starting traction. The rule for the old time four wheel drivers was, "If you get stuck, put it in four wheel drive and go home." So you skid? Slow down.
