Short circuit in instrument lights, where to start? V70-XC70 1999

So I replaced the door chime and everything works normally, as far as I can tell. The interior lights come on and, after closing the door, go off after a delay.

But the instrument lights continue to frustrate. According to everything I can see, fuse #35 should only affect interior lighting (which seems fine) and "accessories," though I don't know what those would be on this model. Maybe the short circuit is unrelated to the instrument lights, power for which should be coming through different fuses? I pulled out the rheostat expecting to see an "in" and an "out" wire, but it's way more complicated than that with half a dozen wires of various sizes. Is there a way to test it's functioning without doing damage to something else? Would be nice if I could swap from the 850 or the XC, but of course they're both totally different....
