Correct about springs, they seldom fail. Great in the engine compartment that needs to be slammed shut, not so good for the trunk which you do not want to slam every time it is opened.

OEM struts, not after market, allow for gentle opening and closing. The after market versions usually have too much strength required, like springs, and will beat the latch to death after a year or two.
