It won't cause the brakes to fail, but they can get harder to actuate with the vacuum loss. That foam IS to keep dirt/dust out.

The failure is the seal around the shaft, which you couldn't see. It is a poor system as far as I am concerned and am glad that the brake company finally decided to replace that design for 2008+.

The work space is not designed for anyone over 2 feet tall. Or anyone over 40 that doesn't take daily Yoga classes.
