Heater core may be leaking - how can I tell? 850 1996

It's possible I've got a leak in the heater core. Symptoms: an odd smell when the heater's on, and the windshield fogs up pretty dramatically when I try to defrost it (eventually, it clears, but it takes time).

I've read through the remove-replace instructions, and it looks doable. But is there a way to check for a leak before I take it all apart?
