The cat ate the remote? Or buried it in the litter box?
Forget buying on online, waste of money because the dealer won't program it. This is a dealer programming job, and dealer only - curse you Volvo!!
"IF" the dealer can find a remote for a 1998 or "IF" the dealer can program the old remote that has new batteries, the programming charge is usually 1 hour of labor. Except that the techs no longer know how to do this on a 1998, and it may take them even longer.
Was the missing remote working not long ago? Some of the 850 cars have a problem with the signal strength in the security module, it gets weaker with age for some reason. But the 1998 only has one door handle with a lock, making the remote very handy when unlocking/locking the car from the passenger side.
