I wondered about that on my 1967 120. When the pressure exceeded the the radiator cap, it released coolant to the overflow bottle. Then, when the engine cooled, the reduced pressure caused the coolant in the overflow to be sucked back to the radiator at engine start. Very similar to the modern cars with the pressure cap on the overflow bottle.
