Hello All,
A few months ago I purchased a used, pristine 2002 S60 T5 that my bride “introduced” to a telephone pole. Luckily she was not injured, but the T5 was totaled. The engine in the T5 had just over 130,000 miles, was very well maintained by documented records. The T5 was a manual 5 speed just like my ’96 850 GLT wagon (non-turbo with a 5 speed manual). The engine in the ’96 850 has just over 300,000 and the compression readings in two cylinders are “so-so”. In a few years, I been advised by mechanic, I may have to have the engine rebuilt. Before I purchased the T5 I had the compression checked, and all cylinders were fine.
The engine in the T5 is a five cylinder, turbo-charged and displaces 2.3 liters. The engine in the ’96 850 is 5 cylinder, non-turbo, and displaces 2.4 liters.
Is it practical/possible to swap the engine out of the 2002 T5 and install it into the ’96 850 GLT wagon or would it be a expensive nightmare? I appreciate any advice on whether this is a realistic option. Thanks to all who reply in advance. What components would have to be replaced to make this swap work?
