Re: Indicator Lights on shift console? 850 1995

Carole

I undertook this globe replacement and posted a description sometime in September. Here is a re-post:

The entire operation took about 1 hour, including talking to interested

neighbours. The only surprises were the cost of the globe/socket - $AU11.28 - and the 'wood' panelling on top of the console!

The tools required are:

T-15 Torx driver

T-20 Torx driver

8mm socket

small screwdriver for prising

A flexible drive, universal joint or short handle for the Torx bits would make

things much easier.

The Haynes manual pages 11.15 and 11.16 is mostly spot on.

Some additional, hopefully useful observations:

- The ashtray compartment is best removed first. Getting to the two screws

securing the lighter/OBD connector panel is still difficult without a flexible

coupling for the Torx bit. The same applies to the two screws securing the

front of the console.

- The lighter is easy to disconnect.

- The OBD connector slides to the left in one piece. There is no mention of it in Haynes. The right edge is best gently lifted over the plastic locating

'bump'. (I don't think this exists on the 95; they have diagnostic boxes under hood.)

- The two wiring harness connectors disconnect with a gentle tug.

- Once all the wires are disconnected and the two 8mm hex head screws are removed in the storage compartment on top of the console, the entire assembly clears the handbrake and auto selector and lifts out fairly easily.

- The globe and socket slips into the base of a white plastic housing under

the 'PRNDSL' markings next to the selector. Easy to spot if you follow the two wires. (My Volvo shop copied the appropriate page from the parts manual very kindly. That was useful.)

- Make sure the illumination globes for the lighter and the selector are

secure before re-assembly, otherwise they will dislodge and you can start

again!

- Test that all the globes work before re-assembly.

Re-assembly was uneventful (apart from dropping a Torx bit a couple of times but, thankfully, it didn't disappear without trace down the console).

It's nice to be able to see everything lit up at night.

Hope this helps.
