Question for T6 engine experts about internal part XC90

Hello, I won't go into a lot of detail as to why, but I removed the oil pan on a blown T6 engine I have to see what was involved. I noticed on the internal side of the block and pan,(molded into the aluminum)a square hole "Journal " on the front side of the block near the #2 piston crank positron. It was blocked with crud. Can anyone tell me the purpose of this square journal? I'm assuming it must be there for a reason. If so, then it was plugged from top to bottom.

Thanks,
